MEET BRIAN MAUGHAN
New Leadership Delivering Results for Our Community
Oklahoma County Commissioner Brian Maughan was first elected in 2008 and was re-elected to a second term in 2012 with some 75 percent of the vote. He was automatically re-elected to a third term in 2016 as the only county official who did not draw an opponent. District Two includes the communities of Bethany, Warr Acres, Choctaw, Harrah and Nicoma Park, as well as unincorporated areas in eastern Oklahoma County and areas of west, northwest and south Oklahoma City. He currently serves as chairman of the Board of County Commissioners, after also serving as chairman in 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2019.
Prior to election, Maughan worked as a Public Affairs Consultant for AT&T, providing strategic legislative and regulatory guidance.
Before joining AT&T, Maughan served as the director of economic development for Oklahoma County District Two and as a public information officer for Oklahoma County Emergency Management and Oklahoma County District Three. Maughan also has considerable experience as a field director, consultant and fundraiser for the Oklahoma Republican Party.
In 2003, Maughan co-founded and now serves as President of Marketing Dimensions, a consulting and marketing firm for both businesses and campaigns.
Maughan is past president for the South Oklahoma City Rotary Club and the U.S. Grant High School Alumni Association. He previously served on the board for the South Oklahoma City Chamber, as Chairman of the YMCA Central District, and was appointed by Governor Frank Keating and later by Governor Mary Fallin to the Oklahoma Developmental Disability Council. Maughan also is involved in the Wheelchair Foundation working with his rotary club to raise funds for the organization. In 2012 he was named one of 40 achievers under 40 by Distinctly Oklahoma magazine. He is also president of Oklahoma City’s Sister Cities organization. He also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Oklahoma City National Memorial Foundation and is actively involved with the South Oklahoma City Rotary Foundation. He also serves on the board of the South Oklahoma City Rotary Club.
Shortly after assuming office, Maughan created the successful SHINE program which organizes low-level non-violent offenders in community service work crews to remove graffiti and trash and beautify and improve the community. SHINE stands for Start Helping Impacted Neighborhoods Everywhere. That effort has saved taxpayers more than $1.5 million and won widespread acclaim, including designation in 2012 by the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University as one of 11 Bright Ideas nationwide in local government innovation. It is also the model for a new statewide law passed in 2012 to allow other counties to duplicate the SHINE program. A companion program, SHINE for Students, rewards young people for community service work under the auspices of the privately funded SHINE Foundation, which Maughan serves as treasurer. During 2017 he will launch additional SHINE initiatives to encourage faith organizations and businesses to get involved in organized community service.
In 2007, Maughan was inducted into the Oklahoma City Community College Hall of Fame for his distinguished service to the community.
Maughan is a 1995 graduate of U.S. Grant High School. He also attended Oklahoma City Community College, obtaining associate degrees in Journalism, Broadcasting, and Public Relations.
